accurately detects viruses, bacteria
and fungi

The METAVITAL MNLS systems are able to diagnose a variety of diseases and support appropriate therapies. In conjunction with the Cell Analysis BOX add-on module, cell samples from humans or horses can also be analyzed accordingly. The measurements reported here are intended to demonstrate the capabilities of the Cell Analysis BOX via qualitative measurements on viruses, bacteria and yeasts as examples of very simply structured cell parts or cells. This provides scientific proof of the analytical capability of the Cell Analysis BOX.

Two measurement campaigns were carried out, one with SGS Fresenius and a second with Airbus Defense and Space

On 15.7.2021, Ms. Schabana from METAVITAL GmbH and Dr. Weyandt from SGS Fresenius carried out corresponding measurements on Escherichia coli, Candida albicans and adenovirus.

On March 8, 2022, Ms. Schabana from METAVITAL GmbH, Dr. Reidt from Airbus Defence and Space and Dr. Lobentanzer from Metavital/ SRITec carried out corresponding measurements on Staphylococcus warneri (live), Sars-Cov-2 (inactivated), Escherichia coli (live) and Legionella pneumophila (inactivated).

The cell analysis BOX

METAVITAL GmbH has developed a new type of measuring head to carry out the planned experiments. This consists of a sample collection vessel, a transmitter/receiver unit and the METAVITAL computer.

Eppendorf Tubes, also known as Eppi’s in technical jargon, with a sample volume of 1.5 ml are used as sample collection devices.

Results

Adenovirus

Human adenoviruses (HAdV) are human pathogenic viruses from the family Adenoviridae and the genus Mastadenovirus. Seven of the 45 species of this genus (status International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV), November 2018) can cause disease in humans and were first identified in 1953 by Wallace P. Rowe and others as pathogens for respiratory infections and isolated from human adenoids, from which their name is derived. (These viruses and other Adenoviridae, which cause necrotic changes in adenoid tissue in culture, were previously known as AD agents, or adenoid degeneration agents. Currently, more than 50 serologically distinguishable subtypes have been identified.

The concentration of adenovirus in the test with SGS Fresenius was 10⁷ CFU/ml (CFU = colony-forming units). A significant value was displayed with the METAVITAL HUMAN TS. There were no contributions from the solvent. This means that the adenovirus can be measured well at the concentrations present.

SARS-CoV-2 virus

SARS-CoV-2 (abbreviation for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2), also known as (novel) coronavirus, is a betacoronavirus similar to the first SARS pathogen and probably of zoonotic origin. It was identified as the cause of the infectious disease COVID-19 at the beginning of 2020. According to the Chinese government, COVID-19 first appeared in the Chinese city of Wuhan at the end of 2019 as a “lung disease of unknown origin”. The World Health Organization (WHO) called COVID-19 a “public health emergency of international concern” on 30 January 2020. As the disease spread worldwide, the spread of COVID-19 was classified as a pandemic on 11 March 2020 (see COVID-19 pandemic)
The virus is between 50 and 140 nanometers in size and is usually transmitted in close human contact through droplets and aerosols. Larger transmission events, known as superspreading events, played a particularly important role in the global spread. SARS-CoV-2 in a thermally inactivated form was measured during the measurement campaign in Friedrichshafen, with a concentration of between 104 and 105 CFU/ml. A value of 0.192 was measured, the solvent demineralized water made no contribution.
The SARS-CoV-2 virus is therefore easily measurable at these concentrations with the METAVITAL HUMAN TS.

Bacteria

Escherichia coli

The concentration of Escherichia coli was 4.2×108 CFU/ml, a value of 0.757 was displayed. However, the control measurements of the solvent were of the same order of magnitude as the measurement signals themselves. This means that Escherichia coli can also be measured well.

Staphylococcus warneri

Staphylococci (Germanized plural from the Latinized singular Staphylococcus, a name introduced by Alexander Ogston based on the term coined by Billroth in 1874. Streptococci, which is composed of the two ancient Greek components σταφυλή staphylé ‘grape’ and κόκκκος kókkos ‘kernel’, ‘grain’, ‘berry’) are round, grape-like, non-spore-forming gram-positive bacteria without active movement from the group of cocci.

The initial concentration of Staphylococcus warneri was 5.2*106 CFU/ml, a value of 0.162 was displayed, with no contribution from the solvent.
The Staphylococcus warneri could therefore also be detected well.

Legionella pneumophila

Legionella pneumophila is a gram-negative, unencapsulated and sporeless rod-shaped bacterium. It is the cause of Legionnaires’ disease and Pontiac fever. The most important (human pathogenic) serotypes of Legionella pneumophila for humans are serotypes 1 (70 to 80 percent of all legionellosis in humans), 4 and 6.

Thermally inactivated Legionella with a concentration between 104 and 105 CFU/ml could just be detected. Legionella pneumophila can therefore be measured at these concentrations.

Mushrooms

Candida albicans

Candida albicans (formerly Monilia albicans and Oidium albicans), the “thrush fungus”, is a fungus of the Candida group, which is classified as a yeast fungus. It is the most common causative agent of candidiasis (also known as can-didosis, candidiasis, candidamycosis, monoliasis, thrush or “diaper fungus” in babies). This fungus is often found on the mucous membranes of the mouth and throat, in the genital area and in the digestive tract in warm-blooded animals and therefore also in humans. According to the German Nutrition Society, it can be detected in around 75% of all healthy people. The fungus can also occur between fingers and toes as well as on fingernails and toenails.
C. albicans is a facultative pathogen (only causing disease under certain conditions) and is considered a saprobiont that colonizes in a state of equilibrium with the human immune system and other microorganisms. Colonization by this fungus usually causes hardly any symptoms. However, if immunity is lacking or reduced (as a result of other underlying diseases such as diabetes mellitus, cancer, AIDS or the administration of certain drugs such as antibiotics), colonization with Candida albicans or related fungi can increase significantly, which then manifests itself as mycosis. In most cases, these are endogenous infections, i.e. the pathogen was already present at the site of the infection before the onset of the disease, and less frequently exogenous infections, i.e. pathogens acquired from outside the body

Conclusion

The measurements with SGS Fresenius in Frankfurt and Airbus Defence and Space in Friedrichshafen show that viruses (adenovirus and SARS-CoV-2), bacteria (Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus warneri and Legionella pneumophila) and yeasts (Candida albicans) can be measured well.

These measurements show that the METAVITAL HUMAN VET can not only detect disease patterns, but also the underlying microbial causes such as viruses, bacteria and yeasts.
